Full Digi-pack

This image was chosen to be the front cover of the digi-pack as i felt i had a lot of strong messages behind it, with Leo being sat on his own, I had tried to make the two D's combine and appear as a sand timer. I thought this was a striking front cover as the name is bold and the contrast between white and black in the text and image helps it become more visible from further away.

I have editied this picture of Conor to give it a more edgy feel to it, I decided to change the colour of the lighting to red as this is the colour of love. This page is where I would just the Cd to be placed as the lighting effects would seem like they are shining down on the disk.

This picture of Leo is also another iconic image that represents both the genre of music and the way that he sings the songs.
I have used this Image for the back cover and the track list as I had an idea for the tracks to follow the path with the artist as if he was going on a journey through the music as well.

Digipack Front cover

This image has kept the iconic image of our artist sat alone looking depressed. With the help of Photoshop, i edited the hue and the colours to make it seem like the sun was shining down on him only, I have also edited the image to look more colourful at the top with the tree tops with purple and as your eyes go down the picture the colours take a darker turn, I thought this met his eyeline and his mental state as he is feeling down and dark.
This Title has been reversed, I have tried to make the word 'REWIND' link at the end of the two 'D's to look like a sand timer to give the effect of time and going back.

Casting 2

Below are pictures of the actor and actress we are using for our piece. We decided upon these who as we thought they matched the theme of the video we were aiming for. As we wanted indie looking people we thought both Fraser and Hannah matched our idea of what the characters should look like. As we had used Fraser in our preliminary task, we knew what his acting skills were like and we decided to use him again based upon this. Hannah has a wide acting background from being in other peoples pieces and from taking drama, we thought she would be very capable of taking part in ours. The pictures below show Fraser and Hannah, as you can see they match the style we were going for

Response to the pitch

I thought the pitch was successful. I think that from using a timetable of dates to keep on track with both filming editing and group discussions we managed to keep on task unless unforeseen things such as a change in actor availability changes. From creating the animatic, i found that it will help us in the long run as it gives a good overview of what the final product may look like. I was very happy with the song and artist choice as I thought it gave us a good margin and genre to work with as the meanings behind the lyrics can be twisted and changed during the narrative and performances. Overall I am happy about the outcome of the final piece considering the troubles that were had during editing with problems such as outfits of actors, as like Mahida has said we thought that Hannah was dressed too casually for the home scene, however I think we worked round it well. I felt that we have also picked very good actors in general for our piece as they knew what they were doing and worked to a very high standard and sacrificed a lot of time for us.

Casting

For our music video we needed two main characters that would feature heavily during our piece. We needed one indie looking boy and another indie looking girl. By indie we wanted someone that looked more alternative to someone else, we wanted our main character to resemble Paolo Nutini's look as much as we could. We came across and asked a few people, we managed to convince our friend Fraser to play the Leo Blue, we made this decision due to his overall look and his acting skills during our casting screening. For the role of Leo's girlfriend we needed a good actor that knew how to use their emotions to speak for them. We looked at quite a few people for this role and thought that Hannah was the most appropriate for this role.

Research into similar artists within Atlantic records

Atlantic Records are notoriously famous for signing male solo artists that sing pop and love songs, along with Paolo Nutini, Atlantic records have Jason Mraz, James Blunt and Trey Songz under their label. These artists are known for their ability to produce mass selling indie/pop songs based around the same subject of love and loss. Although Paolo Nutini may not be the most well known of the 4 artists he, along with James Blunt are the only artists out of this group that's debut album has gone over 4x platinum. Paolo Nutini has kept a low profile in the music industry which may be why he is not as well known as other artists from the same era record label, although Nutini performs at almost all major festivals he has never headlined unlike the others. Although some may say that James Blunt, Jason Mraz and Trey Songz sold our their original intent of making music that they liked to sell albums for pop and radio use. However Paolo has stayed true to his way of making music and has not changed to sell more records.

Atlantic records and Paolo's involvement

File:NutiniSSU.jpgAtlantic Records was founded in 1947 by Herb Abramson and Ahmet Ertegün. The company focuses its artists on  RnB, rock and jazz. Atlantic records was bought by Warner Music in 1967 who distribute to places outside of the US. Paolo signed with Atlantic records in 2005 after his first demo became a hit. His first song with Atlantic records reached 5th in the UK charts. Paolo's album 'Sunny Side Up' Reached number one in the UK chart in mid 2009 making the album go 4x platinum, selling over 1,200,000 copies.

Who is Paolo Nutini?

Paolo Nutini is a young Scottish actor, signed to Atlanic records. Atlantic records have a history of signing many acts like Paolo such as James Blunt, Jason Mraz and Cody Sampson. These artists are all examples of young indie solo acts. Paolo broke through in the mainstream pop scene in early 2009 after many Glastonbury appearances. His album Sunny Side Up was a big hit in indie music as his unique voice and lyrics represented many people that may not have been reached before by music.
Paolo Nutini is one of the first indie artists that has been signed to a label that released their debut album for a free download online 'These Streets' reached number 3 in the UK top 40 chart in july 2006. Paolo has been producing the same genre of music since this album yet had tried to expand his fanbase by producing more jazz like music.

Case study of a music video director - Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves, is primarily a film director and writer yet has produced and directed numerous music videos such as the award winning video for Coldplay's The Scientist in 2003 and Radiohead's Just in 1995. From looking at both videos you can see how Thraves has changed his style. In the video for Just, there is primarily band performance shots however if you contrast this with The Scientist, there is almost no performance except for Chris Martin singing. I really liked the video for The Scientist as the entire video is backwards including the performance sections, the singer had to learn to the song backwards. As Just is Thraves' first music video and coming off the back of a film directing career i felt that the video was very much like a film in a way as it contained a strong narrative and subtitles so you had to pay attention.

Cyber records is born

During the concept and name ideas for our record companies we came across many cool sounding names which had a nice ring to them, we came up with Cyber records almost by accident as there was a doctor who poster in the class room with a Cyberman on it. We all agreed that the name was catchy and could relate to the possible way of selling our artists to the audience and signing new acts.

Applying Goodwin to a music video

In this essay I’m going to be analysing the music video for Noisia Ft Foreign Beggars-Shellshock, directed by Tony T, using many of Goodwin’s theories. The genre of the song is drum and bass which would normally mean in most of music videos of the same genre that there is a very high pace to the video. The characteristics of most other drum and bass song consist of half-naked women dancing provocatively, and with the use of strobe lighting and quick edits it can increase the speed of the video dramatically.
The video begins with 40seconds of narrative or scene setting for the rest of the video to be based on. In these 40seconds we see a young African boy being interviewed as to why he keeps being called for crisis meetings. As the music begins we see a very well built tall man dressed in the same outfit as the young boy with the same hat on. The video then cuts to see a swat team with guns walking through a darkened corridor with the singer in this group. The singer performs while he and the other actors look around for something in the blackness of the corridor. As the beat begins to speed up we see the swat team getting more agitated as they see the tall man stood over what appears to be dead bodies of other swat team members, when the bass of the music drops the swat team begin to open fire on the man, the flashes of the guns are in time with the music along with the flashing of lights going out due to being hit by bullets, this builds a strong relationship between the visuals and the music, this is also increased by the ambient sounds of bullet shells hitting the floor.
As the music slows down, so does the visuals. When the music begins to lose its pace halfway through the video at 1:48 there is a small piece of narrative in which the tall man punches a member of the swat team which in turn starts the music again.
Although there isn’t much connection between the lyrics and the visuals, there is however a line which mentions a Minotaur, we can see a lot of similarities between the myth of the Minotaur and the visuals as there are a group of people in dark corridors trying to avoid a beast or a monster which is after them.
In this video we can see at many different points that the visual and the audio are very well matched which the director has planned, at 41seconds into the video we see a double door open which leads the music and singer to being performing, this shows us that the singer is an important member of the band and of the video as he was framed in a shot within a shot by the director placing him inside a doorway our focus is on him. As the tone and speed of the music changes along with the singer, there is a smoke grenade which has been used to obscure the vision of the monster, this however blocks our view of the singer as well as the monsters’.
In this video there is an element of voyeurism as the monster has noticeable human features such as the torso and the arms and legs, this is considered voyeurism as he still looks human although we know that he isn’t. The area of his body which have human features are well toned, this could mean this video is aimed more toward the female perspective, however the use of guns and fighting and dying could mean it is for both men and women.
As we watch the video there are very little close up on people, yet there are many on filler shots such as shooting guns and areas of the body such as the biceps and peck muscles. This is unconventional for a music video as these are normally the shots which are used the most, although in this video we see mainly medium shots or long shots, the only times close ups have been used are to limit the space the audience think there is between beast and soldiers.
Looking at the monster, although he is not the star he takes much of the limelight in the video as he is the antagonist. On the back of the monsters’ neck we see a tattoo of an eyeball; this is also the one of the many logos which the band uses regularly in most of their videos. However in other videos by the same brand they have gone in a different route as to how they should shoot their videos. In this music video it is made to be more of a narrative rather than showing the band’s performance, this video feels more like watching a 5 minute film instead of anything else. As with the band’s other videos they use much more of a performance by including members playing instruments, this is something the video lacks heavily in, performance value. As most of the music in the song is electronic, there was no way of incorporating it into the video without linking the music to the visuals by using lighting and shells hitting the floor.
Using Goodwin’s theories on music videos concerning the 3 types of music video, illustrative, amplifying or contradictory we can tell that it is illustrative as there is much more elements of a narrative rather than a performance. The video is neither of the other two as to be called contradictory there would need to be an obvious disregard of the lyrics and only think about telling a story that the director and band want to show, this music video in a way could be called contradictory however, much of the audio and visual does match up together, this would destroy the illusion of it being contradictory. The music video is not amplification as it is not trying to raise knowledge of anything or raise the bands status. Although there are many ways in which the video tries to raise the status of the band, the video does this by suggesting they are strong mentally and physically by placing them alongside soldiers fighting an unkillable beast. The band members have also had make up done which the makeup artists have placed scars along the faces of some of the members of the band.
In conclusion this video by Tony T has thoroughly applied Goodwins theories towards a music video during this piece as he has applied all the concepts necessary to be classed as a Goodwin like video

First day of filming

After our story boarding session we all came back the next day with places in mind that we wanted to shoot at, the general view was that we needed a woodland area a home environment and a train station to signify departure and a pub scene to suggest that Leo is drinking away all his sorrows. We managed to come up with Richmond park, My (Joe's house), Kingston station and The Albert pub in Kingston. Today after seeing if Fraser was free we went to Richmond park to film most of the performance shots, although we managed to film most of the performance here we still feel that we need more scenes of performance and will be going out again to do more of the same. We also requested permission from the owners of the Albert pub over whether we could film in and around their pub, they kindly agreed and let us shoot some key scenes.

Animatic

http://ishmamusicvideo.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/anamatic.html
The link above is the final animatic, we created this through the use of our storyboard which we had cut into single sections and took photographs of, we then uploaded these pictures onto Final cut with the track playing in the background, doing so gave us a more realistic view at what our final piece was going to look like. I found this section very helpful as it gave a better insight into what we were going out to film.

Questionnaire findings

From our questionnaire we found that the majority of people we asked were male. We found that the primary gender to return the questionnaire were female. We also found that the majority of people who answered the questionnaire put their favourite type of music as pop.
From the questionnaire I have found that we may need to market our music video towards females from our own age bracket.

Audience Questionnaire

I have developed this questionnaire to help us discover what our target market of audience would most like to see during our music video.
