Analysis of a website

http://www.paolonutini.com/promo.htm

From clicking Paolo's website, straight away we get a picture of him and oh works of art from his album. Although this is only the promo page which doubles up as a link to get you to buy tickets and merchandise it gives a good insight to what the rest of the website will be like.

The picture below is a screenshot of the full website. As you can see it is very tidy and organised with gadgets such as a video player. It also has a quick navigate button on the left hand side with important things such as Lyrics, Store and Gallery on there. This is something I would like to add to our artists website if we made one.

I found Paolo's Website very easy and simple to use yet it had everything advanced on there I still believe that someone new to computers would still be able to find their way through this website. I found that many useful items such as a lyrics tab and a shows tab help the user get around quickly without having to use another website. I found the colour scheme of the website was very helpful too as the contrast between grainy peach and black work very well together.

How Star image has changed - Chris Brown

Chris Brown is a prime example of how an artist can change their image and their sound over the years as they overcome adversity. Chris Brown and Rihanna had a highly publicised break up with Chris Brown getting community service for allegedly beating Rihanna. After their break up Brown rebranded himself as the badboy of the music industry, this is an extreme change from his image and his sound before their breakup which suggested that he was innocent. The images show Chris Brown past and present. As you can see from these pictures, Brown has developed his images to present himself as changing from an innocent teenager to a man. Chris Brown's music used to speak to the teenage generation about love, however now he sings about money.

Star Image - Paolo Nutini

Paolo Nutini is a young Scottish singer signed to Atlantic records. Paolo's image now compared to his breakthrough in early 2006 when he was signed to Atlantic records hasn't changed very much, Paolo has kept true to his core fan base by sticking to his original genre and look, indie/alternate rock/pop. Many people may argue that Paolo doesn't look like a star when you compare him to other artists, he doesn't wear lots of jewellry or drive around in posh cars. These two images, the top one taken in 2006 and the bottom one taken in late 2011 shows that there hasn't much of a change in Paolo's personal appearance or music as you can hear through his albums he has always kept to what got him a recording deal which is the alternate indie/ jazzy pop music.

Preliminary Task Finished

http://zaqwehliye.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/prelimnary-task-video.html
The Link Above will take you to Zaq from our group's blog, as I couldn't upload the link onto my blog from youtube. We found that the Preliminary task help to greatly develop our understanding of how a music video works and the editing process involved. We found the most difficult task was to synchronize the images to the music

Preliminary task storyboards

This storyboard contains our main ideas for the preliminary task. We had the idea for clowns to be used for our piece as we came up with the concept of Fraser, the performer to be in a dream state being chased by clowns.

This picture shows a part of a task sir set us out on, he played us a piece of music and asked us to develop a storyboard for the song without seeing the video. I found that this help to develop our ideas greatly as it improves the way that you think about the music and the meanings behind the lyrics.

Analysis of previous students work

I choose to analyse this music video as I felt the pace and the genre of the music was very similar to the track that our group has chosen. Much like the idea for our piece, this video follows one main characters journey throughout and gives good narrative and performance. What I liked about this music video is the balance between narrative and performance and the way they have been combined at some points. However near the end of the video I felt they ran out of ideas with new shots and began to show the same sort of performance shots of guitars and drums being played. In general I thought this music video was very good as the syncing and charisma of the frontman was very convincing.

Analysis of lyrics

Pickin' up the pieces
of the wreck you went and left The relationship?
and i'm dealing with dilemmas  Whether to go back to her
in my now so stressful life  Realizes he is happier with her
and i'm drinking stronger spirits  Taking the pain away from what's happened
i made my home here on the floor  Been kicked out, on the streets
and i'm losing all ambition
i'm a ghost   Life isnt nothing without her might as well be dead?

and i'm going all out
and i'm thinking you're just as bad

no sleeping at night   From worry/without her being by his side
but i'm going from bar to bar  Drink away his sorrows
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind

oh remember at 16
oh the crazy drunken night we had
when i kissed you in the hallway
then i took you straight to bed

well 2 years on
and i'm still that same boy i was  She has grown up and left him behind

no sleeping at night
but i'm going from bar to bar
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind Oh

no sleeping at night
but i'm going from bar to bar
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind

ooh you might blame it on me
but you persisted that we fold
wiped your hands of me
and said you needed more, more, more

and I'm not sleeping at night
but i'm going from bar to bar
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind Oh

and I'm not sleeping at night
but i'm going from bar to bar
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind
why can't we just rewind Oh

wo woah woah woah
wo woah woah woah
wo woah woah woah
wo wo wo wo....

can't we just rewind

Choosing an artist name

As we've picked an artist now we needed to decide on a name. The group had been given a few days to come up with as many original names as they could. Using my research on similar artists and Paolo Nutini's record label Atlantic records, I found that most people signed under that label either used a single name such as Diggy or Skillet, or had an obsure new original name such as Jason Mraz or Trey songz. This research helped me come up with names for a mind map such as Dylan, and Barney. I chose these names as they have not yet been taken in the music industry with the exception of Bob Dylan. The rest of the group contributed their name ideas and we then picked out 3 names that we liked the most. The one name that came up for everyone was Leo Blue, We thought this name was original, eye catching and entertaining. This name would be simple to create a logo for as we could create a blue lion as his symbol.

Related videos research

After watching various videos by similar artists that sing the same genre of music, I came across this song by Natalie Imbruglia-Torn. The concept of the video shows the relationship between two people deteriorating as the video progresses. What I liked about the video was that only one camera shot/frame is used for the entire video, this breaks many forms and conventions as in most music videos there is a heavy use of extreme close ups and fast cuts depending on the speed of the music. By using a single frame, the video has eliminated these things. I thought this video related strongly to ours as the narrative behind it showed the same as we were trying to portray.

Choosing a song

For our A2 year's coursework we have been asked to make a music video and a digi pack for an artist and song of our choice. We went through many artists and songs to find the perfect video, we managed to go through various songs such as A-team by Ed Sheeran, Covers of many indie artists and stuff by Adele. We came across a cover of a song by Paolo Nutini called Jenny don't be hasty, although we liked the song at first we thought it became too plain. Yet we did like the work of Paolo Nutini which brought us onto a song called Rewind. Everyone began to fall in love with how infectious the lyrics and beat of the song was a we decided to pick it as our track. As a group we had managed to mindmap and cross off songs we knew and knew wouldn't work or would be too hard to do. However finding the song we have chosen was all by chance, I believe this has been to our advantage as we have not heard this song before. This can help us as we have not watched the official video which may obstruct our ideas.

Choosing our groups

As I thought my production with Zaq during the opening sequence of a film went well last year during AS, I have decided I would like to work with him again, as the other people that were in our group last year have moved class or left college we have decided to challenge ourselves and group up with people we have not yet worked with. Zaq and I choose to work with Ishma and Maheda as we thought they had similar ideas to us and looked like we would be the most compatible together compared to anyone else.

The sexualisation/objectification of women in a music video.

Benni Benassi - Satisfaction

During this video, we see many examples of Goodwin and Mulveys theory on voyeurism and objectification of women. The video is based around the idea juxta position of women doing what would normally be seen as a mans job, labour. The objects the women are using can all be used as a euphamistic term for having sex.
The video is primarily aimed towards mens viewing pleasure as it is only females on screen, dressed in almost nothing. Mulvey would say that the women in this video have been turned into nothing more than a slab a meat for men to look at. The use of the close up in this video has more effect than any other video which wouldnt have women parading about naked as it is used to show off the features of the women such as the lips which sing the lyrics and their curves.
The camara movement during this video has given extra emphasis on their bodies as the camara tracks up the body while using slow motion from the legs to the face. This sort of shot is used while the women is dancing provocatively.

semantics of a music video

Keane-Bedshaped

Keane's video for Bedshaped has broken the normal conventions of a music video yet also at the same time it has strengthend them. From the beginning of the video we can see that it is different from most other videos as it has been made using plasticine and visual graphics to animate it.
During the planning of the video the director has made the narritive go off in two different ways, as it links to the song yet also tells a very different story about the battle a person suffers from drugs, alcohol and or mental illnesses. Which most is most likely alcohol and paranoia in this video, which can double up as an ad campaign towards the knowledge and understanding of what people suffering will go through.
The unconventional cartoon and plasticine characters and theme of the video has been original in many ways as there are only a few other videos which use this style. However, the fact the video is uncoventional means that it is highly original yet still follows conventions in many ways, as there are numerous close ups of characters, shots of the band playing. Solo shots of the singer as well as lighting to portray the mood of the song.
As the video has been made with plasticine the band has had to be placed into shot in an original and abstract way, they have been filmed, cartoonised and placed on the walls and skies like graffiti. This could mean that they want the band to be almost criminal in what they are saying as they graffiti could symbolise their message, which is one of anti drugs and awareness.
During the first few seconds of the video we see a cat which comes into shot and jumps on to a cardboard box which we later find out the character is sleeping in. During my analysis of the video I believed the cat to be a guardian angel or the man's saviour as he is helped via the cat many times, the first scene in the video the man is awaken by the cat, he could have been brought back from the brink of a suicide attempt or an attempt to fade out of society but the cat brings him back, builds up his confidence and at "3:03" gives the man a bag which say on the side "There for you" this could be his sub conscious speaking to him, knowing that there is help and that he can recover from his condition with the help of the cat.
At 1:32 we see a billboard which says "on your own?" this relates to both the feelings of the character and the lyrics of the song, these signs are also speaking to the character who may be suffering from schizophrenia, and is telling him his own subconscious thoughts.

In conclusion this music video by Keane uses the narritive and the story to portray the battle an addict goes through to come clean, which in the case of the video I believe he doesnt as he goes off into the white light, which could signify heaven.

Analysis of album art

Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not - Arctic monkeys
I have decided to analyse this album cover as it is different from many I have seen before. The image itself is fairly simple yet can tell you a lot about the music inside. From the picture, we can see that there is a man of early 20's and smoking. The album artwork caused a lot of controversy due to the image of a man smoking. Many people claimed that it was telling people that smoking was alright and that the suggested that the band endorsed it. However in re-releases and in Japan the image has been altered to no have a cigarette.
I thought this album cover broke the normal conventions of an album cover as the title isn't actually displayed on the artwork but only the band name.

Goodwin and Mulvey's theory on voyeurism applied to music videos

Modern day music videos have become more yoveuristic in the eyes of many media theorists such as Goodwin and Larua Mulvey. Goodwin argues that the female performer is frequently being objectified in different ways, such as the fragmentation of mid shot and close ups of the female body, these emphasise a sexualised treatment of women and enhance the way in which men in particular objectify women. In recent years music videos have become music more voyeuristic, or as Laura Mulvey would say, a male controlling gaze, we see this in almost all pop, dance, and rap videos now. For example, the rapper 50 Cent will not be seen in a video unless there is a half naked women dancing around him or a car showing off her body to the public. There are thousands of examples of the objectification of women, however recently, female recording artists have been trying to turn the tables on this by doing the same but with men being objectified, Nicki Minaj is one of these recent trend setters along with Rhianna which shows men shirtless with muscles flexing and dancing, this way both audiences male and female can be attracted by the video.
