Analysis of previous students work

I choose to analyse this music video as I felt the pace and the genre of the music was very similar to the track that our group has chosen. Much like the idea for our piece, this video follows one main characters journey throughout and gives good narrative and performance. What I liked about this music video is the balance between narrative and performance and the way they have been combined at some points. However near the end of the video I felt they ran out of ideas with new shots and began to show the same sort of performance shots of guitars and drums being played. In general I thought this music video was very good as the syncing and charisma of the frontman was very convincing.

Choosing an artist name

As we've picked an artist now we needed to decide on a name. The group had been given a few days to come up with as many original names as they could. Using my research on similar artists and Paolo Nutini's record label Atlantic records, I found that most people signed under that label either used a single name such as Diggy or Skillet, or had an obsure new original name such as Jason Mraz or Trey songz. This research helped me come up with names for a mind map such as Dylan, and Barney. I chose these names as they have not yet been taken in the music industry with the exception of Bob Dylan. The rest of the group contributed their name ideas and we then picked out 3 names that we liked the most. The one name that came up for everyone was Leo Blue, We thought this name was original, eye catching and entertaining. This name would be simple to create a logo for as we could create a blue lion as his symbol.

After watching various videos by similar artists that sing the same genre of music, I came across this song by Natalie Imbruglia-Torn. The concept of the video shows the relationship between two people deteriorating as the video progresses. What I liked about the video was that only one camera shot/frame is used for the entire video, this breaks many forms and conventions as in most music videos there is a heavy use of extreme close ups and fast cuts depending on the speed of the music. By using a single frame, the video has eliminated these things. I thought this video related strongly to ours as the narrative behind it showed the same as we were trying to portray.

Choosing a song

For our A2 year's coursework we have been asked to make a music video and a digi pack for an artist and song of our choice. We went through many artists and songs to find the perfect video, we managed to go through various songs such as A-team by Ed Sheeran, Covers of many indie artists and stuff by Adele. We came across a cover of a song by Paolo Nutini called Jenny don't be hasty, although we liked the song at first we thought it became too plain. Yet we did like the work of Paolo Nutini which brought us onto a song called Rewind. Everyone began to fall in love with how infectious the lyrics and beat of the song was a we decided to pick it as our track. As a group we had managed to mindmap and cross off songs we knew and knew wouldn't work or would be too hard to do. However finding the song we have chosen was all by chance, I believe this has been to our advantage as we have not heard this song before. This can help us as we have not watched the official video which may obstruct our ideas.

Choosing our groups

As I thought my production with Zaq during the opening sequence of a film went well last year during AS, I have decided I would like to work with him again, as the other people that were in our group last year have moved class or left college we have decided to challenge ourselves and group up with people we have not yet worked with. Zaq and I choose to work with Ishma and Maheda as we thought they had similar ideas to us and looked like we would be the most compatible together compared to anyone else.

The sexualisation/objectification of women in a music video.

Benni Benassi - Satisfaction

During this video, we see many examples of Goodwin and Mulveys theory on voyeurism and objectification of women. The video is based around the idea juxta position of women doing what would normally be seen as a mans job, labour. The objects the women are using can all be used as a euphamistic term for having sex.
The video is primarily aimed towards mens viewing pleasure as it is only females on screen, dressed in almost nothing. Mulvey would say that the women in this video have been turned into nothing more than a slab a meat for men to look at. The use of the close up in this video has more effect than any other video which wouldnt have women parading about naked as it is used to show off the features of the women such as the lips which sing the lyrics and their curves.
The camara movement during this video has given extra emphasis on their bodies as the camara tracks up the body while using slow motion from the legs to the face. This sort of shot is used while the women is dancing provocatively.
